Farol beach Farol beach, Eastern Algarve, Portugal

Great lighthouse, and the beach isn't bad either...

'Farol' means 'lighthouse' in Portuguese, thus the name of the beach and the village. Farol beach is on the eastern end of Ilha da Culatra, next to the barra between this island and Ilha Desserta. You can walk right out on a long breakwater which forms the barra if you like. It is a great palce to fish from and can reap some big rewards at the right time of year.

Farol beach itself runs all the way to the left until it meets the access point from Culatra. Sheltered and busy close to the village, it soon empties out going west. It makes a great day trip to go to Farol and take your time to explore and walk the beach to Culatra and take the ferry back from there. You'll be sand, sea and wind swept and will get more fresh air than you've probably had in the last year. Far away - Farol - Fantastic!

Access to Farol beach

Access to Farol beach is by ferry from Olhão. The ferry goes from the landing stage at the eastern end of the waterfront gardens. The ferry has a time table and does a round trip to Farol and Culatra. If it goes to Culatra first, it takes about 45 minutes. If it goes to Farol beach first, it takes about 30 minutes.

At Farol, you may have to climb steps onto the pier at low tide. Then you walk through the village to the beach, which takes about 15 or so minutes.
