Further information
What is the accommodation like ?Very special. Its not everyday you get to holiday in a windmill, and one in which so many original features have been incorporated into delightful new living spaces. The ground floor of the windmill is now a wonderfully cosy, cave-like indoor dining room. Up the stone steps to the next floor you will find a window seat beside the old mill wheel. Then ascending the ladder to the top floor, you are in the conical roof amidst the original working mechanism. Here, you are on top of the world and can look right down to the Algarve coastline from the two large windows. You can swing in the hammock or lounge on the gaint bean bags; quite simply the best place we've found yet to chill out with a good book and while away the hot siesta hours. It's a dream. In the cottage built around The Windmill, you have an attractive, galley-like kitchen, with views to the coast and a door to the outside terrace. From the kitchen, you can step down into the lounge, with its comfortable sofa, satellite TV and double patio doors to the terrace. The principal bedroom has a double bed, an en-suite shower room and views to the east and the rising sun. The second bedroom has twin beds and views to the north. The main bathroom has a small bath with a shower in it. What outside spaces and facilities are there ? There is a large, south-facing terrace which has panoramic views down to the coast and out over the sea. This is where you will spend most of your time in the summer. Immediately outside the kitchen, there is a dining table under a shade roof - with panoramic views of the Algarve. In front of this, on the edge of the hill, is the pool - also with panoramic views. There are sunloungers for around the pool. There is a small lawned garden on the west side of The Windmill, walled and gated from the entrance. The eastern side of the terrace is also walled and gated to keep you private and in the lee of any Eastern or Northern winds. Also within the terrace area is a built in barbeque and wood/charcoal burning oven. Climb the staircase that winds around The Windmill and you find yourself on a roof terrace with 360º views and offering total privacy. To the east of the house is a further terraced area with stone bench where early risers can watch the sun come up. At the front of the house is a walled and gated parking area. In short, there is always somewhere private outside in the sun or the shade, out of the wind and always with fantastic views. Being a windmill, you are on the top of a small hill, so everywhere around you is down. You can walk five minutes back up the road into the local village for a coffee, a beer or a meal. Or you can set out across the hills of the Algarve countryside and perhaps come back via the road. The nearest beach is at Cabanas, a 15 minute drive down hill. There is a tiny shop 5 minutes walk away in the local village which stocks some essentials. The old lady who owns it may even serve you eggs fresh from her own chickens or oranges fresh from her trees. The nearest supermarket is on the outskirts of Tavira, a 15 minute drive away. There are two simple local restaurants within less than five minutes walk into the village. Food normally has to be ordered in the morning. Otherwise, it's a 15 minute drive down the hill into Cabanas or Tavira, where a wealth of eating options awaits you. Faro airport is about a 50 minute drive away. Yes. A donkey would be more appropriate, but perhaps too slow. See our car hire. The Windmill makes for a fabulous holiday in the Algarve, in a fabulous location, so just sit back and enjoy it. Float in the pool and out into the air down to the coast. Relax in the turret of The Windmill. Read a book or three. Enjoy the silence. Yes, they'll love it. Are pets welcome ? No, sorry. No. Smoking outside only. SMOKERS MUST BE PARTICULARLY VIGILANT IN THE DRY SUMMER MONTHS DUE TO THE HEIGHTENED RISK OF FIRE. Change-over days are Saturdays. Check-in time is 16:00 hrs and check out time 11.00 hrs. In the winter months, we are flexible on times. The minimum stay is 7 nights, though once here, you won't want to go home so you'd be better off booking 2 or 3 weeks. For guests who have stayed here before, The Windmill is the new name for 'O' Moinho. |
